History: Born and raised in Iowa, spending the majority of childhood on a farm outside of Winterset, IA. Graduated from Winterset High School in 1976. Married Sara Bunz (Manning, IA) in 1985. Three children: Nathaniel (20) attending college at Central Washington University; Jonathan (18) attending Carroll High School in Fort Wayne Indiana; Mikal Soo (16) attending Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, IN. Sara has over 20 years experience as a music teacher.

Education: 1976-77 attended Iowa State University in the pre-vet program. Transferred to Concordia Teacher’s College in Seward, NE in 1977 and graduated with a BS in Elementary Education in 1980. Received M Div degree from Concordia Theological Seminary in 1984 and a STM in 1990. Currently working on a PhD at the University of Durham, England in the area of “Concepts of the Afterlife in the Old Testament and Second Temple Judaism” and writing a dissertation on “Joseph as a Death and Resurrection Figure in Old Testament and Second Temple times.”

Service: Graduate Assistant at Concordia, Seward in 1983-84; Graduate Assistant at Concordia Theological Seminary in 1984-85. 22 ½ years of Parish Ministry. 9 ½ years at St. John’s Lutheran in Burt, IA; 12 ½ years at Peace Lutheran Church and School in Bremerton, WA. In 2007 accepted a Call as Associate Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN.

Served 6 years as Chair of the Youth Committee of Iowa District West; 6 years on the Board of Directors of IDW; 8 years on the Board of Governors for Camp Okoboji; 7 years as Circuit Counselor in the Northwest District; 5 years as LWML District Counselor for Washington-Alaska; 3 years as Chair of the Puget Sound Pastoral Conference.

Publications: A devotional book entitled, The Children (not the adults) of God, 2002.

Basic Training KY

A two-day basic training seminar was held in Shepherdsville, KY on May 1-2, 2012. The seminar was offered to suicide prevention specialists and faith-based organizatons. Read more...

Freedom Through Art


The "Freedom Through Art" program invites veterans and their families to come and relax with each other as they work on any number of artistic projects. The group meets every Tuesday from 6-8 PM. All supplies and materials are provided free to veterans and their families. See the FTA flyer for more information.



Women Veterans Wellness Retreat

The next two Women Veterans Wellness Retreats will be held on July 13-15 and September 28-30, 2012, at the Victory Noll Center in Huntington, Indiana. These retreats are open to any female veteran regardless of age or service period including those currently serving. See flyer for details.
